It's all cumulative

I just had an urgent voice mail waiting on my cell phone. It was from a gentleman looking to purchase wireless internet access for his new office, asap.

I haven't sold that stuff since 2002.

It just goes to show the cumulative effects of self-marketing ... 5 years later, people are STILL calling thanks to the marketing campaigns I did way back then!!

Hey Frank, Your post made me laugh as this used to happen to me all the time - I just got around to changing my cell phone # after 5 years and 2 different sales jobs. The biggest deal that I missed out on was a guy who had finally gotten budget approval on a 180k deal, 8 months after I had left the company... My old partner scored a nice commission out of that deal.

I suppose the lesson is a combination of "patience" & "never give up" but it does drive home the fact that sometimes deals just take a long time and your time is better spent elsewhere.

I was about to leave my office to attend a very important meeting when my mobile rang and heard this, "Good morning, Darren. This is _______ calling from ________. I'd like to ask a few questions to determine whether our financial product might meet your needs."

My immediate response was, "What product is this?"

"Personal loan," the cold caller replied.

"No thanks. Bye," I said.

As the person receiving the cold call, I HATED it when I'm rushing to go somewhere and somebody decided to (interrupt, delay, etc) me. The worst part is I don't need/want what the cold caller is selling.
